In the race for high-tech supremacy, the United States looks to be losing the lead. Over the last few decades, China has invested heavily in new research, development, and strategic planning, leading to something of a golden age for new tech innovation. The U.S, on the other hand, has fallen short.

China produces more than 60% of all electric vehicles. They’ve surpassed the U.S. in clinical trials for new drug development. China adds more renewable energy to the grid than any other country. These are just a few examples of the ways in which China is beating the U.S.

Evan Osnos, staff writer at The New Yorker, wrote about this rapid growth in China’s tech sectors and what that means for the U.S.

“Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal spoke with Osnos about his reporting.
