Happy Birthday, Mr. President
TEXT OF STORY
SCOTT JAGOW: President Bush turns 60 today. What do you get the leader of the free world who has everything? Marketplace’s Hillary Wicai went fishing for some gift ideas.
HILLARY WICAI: Budget Analyst Stan Collender says if he were president . . .
STAN COLLENDER:“I’d close my eyes, blow out the candles and be wishing that gas prices would fall by at least a dollar a gallon.”
Maintaining Republican control of the House and Senate this fall could be tough with presidential approval ratings that many don’t expect to rise as long as gas prices continue to.
But Michael Goldstein at Babson College says if you’re the president and could be granted a birthday economic fantasy, why not go for the biggie?
MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN:“I would wish that Canada would buy the six New England states from the United States . . .”
It would get rid of some key Democrats . . .
GOLDSTEIN:” . . . freeing up enough money to generate a massive tax cut for the southern states that remain.”
Of course, the gift that keeps giving.
