Overall job cuts may be down from last year, but the number of planned job cuts rose in March than the previous month. Employers announced 67,611 layoffs, up from 42,090 in February, according to global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
From Reuters:
“The first quarter of 2009 really marked the peak of downsizing for this recession. Unfortunately, many people are still jobless and many businesses are still shuttered,” John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in a statement.
Tomorrow’s account of national joblessness is expected to remain at the current rate of 9.7 percent.
