Sony is apparently introducing the latest version of its handheld gaming system, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) on January 27th, according to Bloomberg. The same report said Sony is also getting ready to debut a new game oriented phone in February. This idea of the PSP phone has been kicking around for a while now but now it appears it will actually show up. Both the new PSP and the new phone come at an interesting time. A lot of the momentum in portable gaming has been gobbled up by apps played on smart phones and iPod Touches. The Nintendo DS series for younger gamers has also done well, much better than previous incarnations of the PSP. So: can Sony keep up? Will the PSP be such a leap forward (in the way the Nintendo 3-D 3DS may be) that it becomes a must have? What games will be available for the phone and will they compare in range, quality, selection, and price to stuff found in an app store? Is Sony leaping forward or falling behind?
