For Marketplace, Friday, January 21, 2011

The big announcement that Google’s co-founder Larry Page is taking over as CEO didn’t go down so well on Wall Street today. Steve Henn talked to Kai about the challenges the company faces ahead. Another CEO was in the news today: GE’s Jeffrey Immelt was tapped by President Obama to head a new jobs panel. It’s the latest of olive branches the president has extended to the business community. Bank of America reported its losses of $2 billion last year. It’s still paying for its bad housing bets with Countrywide.

China correspondent Rob Schmitz revisited a recent story on the land grab in China with news that the government may be helping out landowners. Economy 4.0 correspondent David Brancaccio reported from Germany on frugality and worker protections.

And as it is Friday, we had the weekly wrap and then kicked back with a sketch from the Upright Citizens Brigade. And here are the songs we played:

  • Out of Gas – Modest MouseBuy
  • Collarbone – Fujiya and MiyagiBuy
  • Acá Entera – Javiera MenaBuy
  • AM/FM – !!!Buy
  • So Begins Our Alabee – Of MontrealBuy
  • Framed With Gold – Graph
