Let’s see what Reed Hastings has to say about this

John Moe Sep 20, 2011

Back in April, Dish Network won an auction to buy Blockbuster for a sweet $320 million. And, as if Netflix didn’t have any other fires to put out, on Friday Dish will debut its streaming movie service.

Some things to look for:

  • Will it be named after Blockbuster? Because…really? A brand that is now synonymous with vacant storefronts?

  • Blockbuster already has a DVD by mail and streaming service so this could be a dramatic upgrading of that. Otherwise it’s kind of weird to launch something that already, you know, exists.

  • What will the selection be? People complain about Netflix’s streaming selection all the time. Could this be better and really give Red Envelope a run for its money? And if so, why has Blockbuster never been able to do that before?
