Oil companies bid for leases in Gulf of Mexico

A somewhat curious follow-up in the oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico last year and Thomas Thwaites’ quest for a bucket of crude oil from BP.

The Interior Department held a big auction of oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico today — first in a good, long while. BP was the high bidder in 11 of them. $27 million, the balance due on that one.
