And this final note. We’ve heard a lot in recent years about the disappearing middle class. Well, anyone attending either the Republican or Democratic National Conventions will be able to watch it happen.

The artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese plan to install ice sculptures, weighing in at more than 2,000 pounds, with the words “middle class” in four-foot-tall letters.

The conventions are in Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C., meaning they will of course disappear in the heat. While the real middle class may be taking years to melt away, the sculptures will take anywhere from six to 24 hours.
