Obama to kick off White House economic offensive
Starting Wednesday, President Obama will make a series of speeches on the economy. He’s trying to set the stage for this fall.
According to a mass email sent out by a Senior White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer, the president will talk about rebuilding the economy, with a big emphasis on the middle class, while also touching on education, healthcare and job security. The first speech will be this Wednesday at Knox College in Illinois. The president spoke there on the economy eight years ago, when he was first elected to the Senate.
Over the weekend, the White House released a YouTube video blending together clips from the president’s past economic speeches. In the video, the President Obama frames the debate based on his economic agenda:
“What’s at stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, secure their retirement.”
The federal government is expected to bump up against its borrowing limit this fall, which is likely to raise the issue of federal debt and the deficit. Some Republicans say they won’t raise the debt ceiling unless spending is cut more. The White House says it’s not making any deal like that.
