A morning markets update

A weaker-than-anticipated jobs report las week suggests to some that the Federal Reserve was too slow to lower interest rates, raising the possibility of a recession in the U.S. The VIX index of stock market volatility is up sharply — although down from a peak earlier today that was in line with its jump during the pandemic lockdowns in 2020.

Some pain in global markets, too

A lot of focus today is on Japan with that major drop in the Nikkei stock index — it fell 13% on the Tokyo exchange. That’s the biggest one day fall since the 1987 market crash and seven times bigger than the S&P 500’s decline on Friday. We’ll discuss with Julia Coronado, founder of MacroPolicy Perspectives, who has long experience tracking the global economy.
